Monel R-405

MONEL R-405 (UNS N04405) is a low-carbon variant of MONEL 400, a nickel-copper alloy optimized for enhanced weldability and reduced susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. This alloy retains the excellent corrosion resistance of MONEL 400, particularly in marine, chemical, and acidic environments, while its low carbon content makes it ideal for welding-intensive applications. It maintains stable mechanical properties across a temperature range from cryogenic conditions to approximately 482 °C (900°F) and is widely used in industries requiring both corrosion resistance and reliable weld performance.

Behaviour that matters in service

• Enhanced Weldability — With a carbon content ≤ 0.05% (significantly lower than MONEL 400’s ≤ 0.30%), MONEL 405 avoids carbide precipitation during welding, eliminating intergranular corrosion risks in welded joints. This makes it suitable for large-scale welded structures like chemical reactors and marine pipelines.
• Superior Corrosion Resistance — Inherited from MONEL 400, it resists corrosion in seawater, brine, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and alkaline solutions. It also withstands pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, ensuring long-term service in harsh environments.
• Stable Mechanical Properties — It maintains high tensile strength (minimum 550 MPa), yield strength (minimum 240 MPa), and ductility (minimum 30% elongation) at low to moderate temperatures. Even in cryogenic conditions, it remains tough without brittleness, suitable for low-temperature industrial equipment.
• Good Fabricability — It can be easily processed via forging, rolling, machining, and bending. Post-fabrication heat treatment (e.g., annealing at 980 – 1040 °C followed by rapid cooling) further optimizes its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Typical applications

• Chemical Processing — Used in welded chemical reactors, heat exchangers, storage tanks, and valve bodies for handling corrosive media (e.g., sulfuric acid, chlorine). Its low carbon content ensures welded joints resist corrosion, avoiding leakage risks.
• Marine Engineering — Applied in large welded seawater pipelines, offshore platform structural components, and ship hull parts. It resists saltwater corrosion and marine organism attachment, extending equipment service life.
• Oil and Gas Industry — Utilized in welded oil well casings, offshore drilling platforms, and sour gas (containing hydrogen sulfide) transportation pipelines. It withstands brine and sour gas corrosion, ensuring safe oil/gas extraction and transportation.
• Cryogenic Engineering — Used in low-temperature storage tanks, refrigeration system components, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipelines. Its cryogenic toughness prevents brittle fracture in ultra-low temperature environments.
• Food Processing — Suitable for welded food-grade equipment (e.g., mixers, conveyor systems, and storage tanks). It is non-toxic, corrosion-resistant, and easy to clean, complying with FDA food safety standards.
