Hastelloy B3
HASTELLOY B-3 (UNS N10675) is a nickel-molybdenum alloy for reducing service, chiefly hydrochloric acid at every concentration and temperature, and the sulphuric, acetic, formic and phosphoric acids that behave the same way. B-3 was introduced to remove the intermediate-temperature embrittlement that limits B-2: it keeps its ductility after welding and forming, which is why it has largely taken over that duty.

Behaviour that matters in service
- Hydrochloric acid — The reason the alloy exists: it holds up in HCl at all concentrations and temperatures, which no stainless grade and no chromium-bearing nickel alloy can do.
- Non-oxidising service only — There is almost no chromium in the specification, so there is no passive film to rebuild. Aerated acid, ferric or cupric salts and other oxidising species will attack it: the duty has to be genuinely reducing.
- Stability over B-2 — B-3 controls the ordering reaction that embrittles B-2 in the 650 – 870 °C band, so it is far less sensitive to the cooling rate after welding or heat treatment.
Typical applications
- Chemical Processing — Reaction vessels, columns and piping handling hydrochloric acid.
- Acid Handling — Sulphuric, acetic, formic and phosphoric acid service that is non-oxidising.
- Welding Wire and Fittings — Matching filler for B-3 vessels; rings, springs and fittings.
